Protected Areas
- Lakshadweep adds 3 Protected Areas with a total area of 645 sq.km under wildlife protection Act to the Country's Protected Area Network. This is the 4th Protected Area declared in Lakshadweep within a span of last 2 years. The first such Protected Area is Pitty Bird Sanctuary which was notified on 25th January, 2019 and now dedicated to legendary Birdman of India Dr. Salim Ali and *declared as Dr. Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary, Pitti
- World's first Sea Cucumber Protected Area declared in Lakshadweep- named in memory of the first President cum Chief Counselor of Lakshadweep and legendary leader of the people of Lakshadweep who has immensely contributed for the development of Lakshadweep Islands Dr. K.K Mohammed Koya and declared/notified as *Dr. K.K Mohammed Koya Sea Cucumber Conservation Reserve, Cheriyapani with an area of 239 sq.km
- Lakshadweep declares First Marine Birds Conservation Reserve of the country - named in the memory of former Union Minister and legendary leader of the people of Lakshadweep who has immensely contributed for the development of basic infrastructure and Transportation system of Lakshadweep Islands Shri P.M. Sayeed and declared/notified as *P.M. Sayeed Marine Birds Conservation Reserve with an area of 62 sq.km
- Lakshadweep declares single Largest (global) Marine Conservation Reserve in between Amini and Pitty Archipelago with an area of 344 sq.km- named in the memory of the legendary Social Working of Lakshadweep who helped in social upliftment of people of Lakshadweep, Shri. AAttakoyaThangal and *declared as AttakoyaThangal Marine Conservation Reserve, Amini-Pitti* with an area of 344 sq.km
- The final notifications for all 3 Protected areas have been issued in consultation of the local communities as per the provisions of Wildlife Protection Act-1972
- Lakshadweep dedicates it's first Wildlife sanctuary to Legendary Birdman of India Dr. Salim Ali - UT of Lakshadweep Administration had declared it's first Wildlife sanctuary as per the provisions of Wildlife Protection Act-1972 with an area of 40 sq.km on 25th January, 2019 and now *declared as Dr. Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary, Pitti
Lakshadweep now has approximately 685 sq.km of Marine Biodiversity hotspot and Marine Wildlife species rich area out of total 2000 sq.km of lagoon (34.25%) under India's Vital Protected Area Network
